Now this is a very nasty and intense beast of an album from these young UK tech-core death metallers. Focusing on high velocity technical death metal with the odd core moment gives this a slightly chaotic nature. With no intro in earshot the rapid fire snare assault and macho barked vocals are relentless. The plethora of time changes on the starting track “Deep Throat” (stop smirking back there), just warn you of the impending instrument extravaganza your ears are about to be subjected to. The barely noticeable track change into “Irminsul” is rife with guitar tweaks and twangs this side of a Cryptopsy album. The heavy slam riff in the middle offers a slight respite from the tornado of riffs and hyper speed blasting.
The recent news event surrounding the monstrous Josef Fritzl, also the title of the song gets the bands whirlwind treatment before a very peculiar change ends the track. The bedlam continues into “Apollo’s Lyre” and here my first reference to Pig Destroyer arises. The technicality elevates in “Dead Girls” but here a deathcore style permeates amidst a mind boggling array of time changes that are matched by the equally manic drumming style. 30 seconds of noise titled “Dance Like An Epileptic” precedes “Barrymore’s Pool Party” and a return to the Cryptopsy style with a catchy and fairly accessible riff that slows substantially before returning to blast territory. It may be sacrilegious to say they have moments of Architects guitar wizardry on “Akura-Class” but the description is relevant even if the music is somewhat heavier despite another weird ending. The album closes with “Suis La Luna” and here the Pig Destroyer reference juts its grind nose into the picture along with Necrophagist style high speed bursts of technical dexterity.
Whilst not the easiest sub-genre of death metal to digest The Boy Will Drown keep the songs short and to the point but with a nimble dexterity for manically engaging tunes.
