These Australian Grindcore merchants have apparently just gone through some line up changes, but having formed in 2004 ‘Our Ashes Built Mountains’ represents their second full-length release, all 20 tracks (you know this will be grind – ha!)
Ripping into your soul is the frantic opener ‘Mannequins’, having a loose low end bass grind to that of early purveyors, fellow countrymen Captain Cleanoff and European legends Nasum and Rotten Sound would be a comfortable accompaniment straight into ‘Husk’ and ‘Information Scars’. Their sound is much more European in attack, whilst ‘Tumour’ gets a guttural expulsion of aggression, and almost twin vocal attack to what Gorerotted used to do, the screaming and the gore. Taking things to another level they have the groove embedded within this relatively long track (over 2 minutes). ‘Flightless’ gives you more death metal mixing in with grinding assaulting depravation, vocally, it is changing a little bit on this one too, the bass heavy slow release of energy part way through gives you a little breather, but you know your going to get “it” sooner or later. Alas, I have been cheated, it plays out with sound samples but leading into ‘Coil’ which is a scintillating death metal tune making it one of the slowest tracks on offer. ‘Paradigm’ has far too much “core” for my liking, but a stunning and topically titled ‘Hang Them By Their Crowns’, a proper grind number, quickly restores this balance.
I like grind; it’s refreshing and energetic but whilst these Aussies are not going to set new trends, or stand out too much from the crowd, one thing is for sure is that Beyond Terror Beyond Grace beats the crap out of your head and ‘Our Ashes Build Mountains’ would sit well in your grind collection.
