I must admit that I haven't got the last few Danzig albums, primarily because the dance tinged stuff did nothing for me, but in many ways this is what I would've expected from him back when he went electro. "Circle Of Abomination" is full of energy, more akin to Samhain in style. Maelstrom's vocals are a slightly angrier version of Danzig's and suit their stuff really well. Makko's slow long guitar riffs are as rich and deep as Maelstrom's voice and Morgan's bass rumble. Hrafn's drumming is precise and can swing effortlessly from slow and groovy to fast and punky, like he does in "Weaving Death". There's a beautifully eerie blues feel to "The Other Hell", even when the guitars get heavier and drumming more frantic. Both "Morning Czar Shineth" and "Ironwood" are heavy doom influenced numbers. "Ramsvart” has very slowly whispered vocals and a great horror movie ambience to it. Livening things up a bit again is "Unto Dying Eyes", despite its title, with its rather happy tempo and guitar sound, while "Black Mark" is a nice fast and very short punk number. All the longer numbers, like "Coming Forth By Night", tend to be slower and really showcase the haunting vocals and this one happens to have an exquisite lead that goes on for about a minute. "Dawn Of Flesh" ends it all at a frenzied pace.
After doing a bit of digging I now know that Death Wolf are a reinvention of Devils Whorehouse, who started out mainly playing Misfits/Samhain covers. Guess that helps why I really enjoyed listening to this then.
