Suffolk is home of many exports, my favourite being Aspall’s cider, but in the world of metal, it’s really only known as being the home of a certain Mr Filth and his synonymous Cradle. However, formed in 2010, the incredibly young A Deeper Dreed is out to widen the appeal of that fine county to the headbanger.
Unlike the Gothic growls of Dani and co, A Deeper Dreed fall far more into the category of nu-metal, the bass heavy beats and double kick drum, complete with squealing guitar hooks putting me far more in mind of the likes of Forever Never. Layered on top of these are the high vocals of Shaun Lotay, sounding very much to my ear like Placebo’s Brian Molko. EP opener ‘Masquerade’ and follow ups ‘The Cell’ and ‘Glass to Sand’ start with traditional metal riffs before changing direction, ‘Glass to Sand’ having a slow anthemic lighter waving chorus to counterpoint the stomping break down and somewhat discordant guitar solo, quirky time changes hinting at the influence of S.O.A.D.
The mixing of styles and tempos is no more apparent then in the EP closer, ‘A Deeper Red’ which wanders around for six and a half minutes as if trying to show off the many sounds of the band without grabbing any root coherence.
Undoubtedly, with not even a year together, the band has done much to be praised in releasing such a professional looking CD and getting it distributed through some major online retailers. However, for me, the EP just continually points at potential, as opposed to showing achievement, and each track felt like it could be trimmed down and tightened. I look forward to seeing if with time and practice, A Deeper Dreed can showcase the skills this taster hints at.
