Artist: MMD
Title: Words Of Dead God
Type: EP
Label: Self Released

This has to be one of the better Blackened-Death Metal demos I’ve heard in a long time. First of all, and most importantly, it doesn’t sound like either early Darkthrone, nor does it sound like Behemoth’s recent output - both great archetypes but over-imitated these days. Secondly for an EP by an unsigned band this is pretty well produced which only increases your enjoyment despite the somewhat comical cover art.

The opening bars of ‘With cold Lips I Kiss’ tap into that old-school black metal sound before quickly descending into a more modern take on the style with it’s heavier guitars coupled with slick keyboards. ‘Purulent Web Of Deception’ is a bit of a mouthful but it successfully continues to rework that sound into a chugging head-banging anthem with its big riffs and tempo changes. ‘Rage In Blood’ sounds, both in title and riff, like it might be a bit Dethklok to begin with, but that wall of death metal guitars symphonic keys and layered vocals soon hits to restore some faith. The title track ‘Words Of Dead God’ throws and big curve ball with its slow chugging intro before unleashing another huge slice of blackened death metal.

MMD have got all the tools to be a big name. The songs have the polish and catchiness of Satyricon as well as the Brutal Death Metal slant of bands like Ill Disposed. It makes for a very interesting combination, and it is a combination that should gain a good foothold in the scene if and when a label picks this band up.
