Russian Thrashers Sanheim certainly like their Germanic Thrash. Taking their cue from two or three of the big names of this part of Europe, the Russian scene always pulls in crowds for lovers of this sub-style. Fast, furious, raw, aggressive, there are many words to describe the same thing. In this instance, ‘Napalm’ bears no slugging approach in commanding a neck wrenching listen, is you discount some of the timing discrepancies. The musical intent is present, the chord structures, the drumming style and the vocal rasp signal a band concentrating on producing old school thrash whilst still developing their own identity. You can for example hear where the solo’s want to go, but sometimes they fall flat and hit loose strings and bum notes, but in the grand scheme of things, who really cares? Young bands should certainly be encouraged to enter the musical stage as soon as some credible material is available. Credible the music as it is, development would subsequently make this a little more presentable to a wider audience.
‘Black Knight’ thunders into life, Kreator and Destruction would be proud, the bulletbelts are no doubt ordered and ready for deployment. Keeping your head bobbing and your concentration knurling with aggression, some work has gone into this one, this is an improvement in talent, execution and general feel, which begs the question of the timing of studio recordings, or maybe this is just a coincidence. Then if you want more filthy Euro-Thrash, be prepared for ‘Root of Evil’, degenerating the listener further, and testing your true grit and determination and developing a groove.
A worthy listen, it is clear of the intention of Sanheim, the execution is not always up to professional standards, but what you get in return is a young band hell bent of reproducing the German Thrash of the mid 1980’s, now that cannot be band can it?
