Co-founder of Motley Crue, talented and quite wealthy, Nikki Sixx is now on his second album release with Sixx AM, along with members DJ Ashba and James Michael. The first album relating to Sixx’s battle from the years with crue, full of Sex, Drugs, Rock and roll, and now ‘This is Gonna Hurt’ relates to Sixx’s book of photography work on the weird and mysterious, in finding beauty in the differ, the tracks relate to each picture, explaining the past couple of years Sixx has been through and seen, which also includes interviews with the people involved in the pictures he has taken. I Popped it in my CD drive to see if the album is impressive as the first...
Straight in with some impressive bass lines (of course its Nikki Sixx it has to stand out) the first and album titled track ‘This is Gonna Hurt’ some almost sleaze glam beats siliar to the new Motley Crue material and then came the voice James Michael which makes a huge difference to the way the track comes across, suddently not glam. ‘lies Of The Beautiful People’ got my head bouncing with the catchy riffs and the vocals sounding completely different to the first track. The chorus I adored, stupidly catchy, reminding me of 90s rock.
‘Are You With Me’ takes a deeper and more emotional approach, with the heartfelt lyrics and almost feeling like it could be made by 30 Seconds to Mars (I know, booooo!!) but still a great track if you’re a fan of Sixx AM/Nikki Sixx. ‘Live Forever’ breaks in with some brutal guitar riffs and again the vocals with the 90s rock feel, just amazing, and seems heavily influenced by some early Muse stuff, although I could be wrong? The guitar solo, impressive as hell.
A stunning change to the album ‘Sure Feels Right’ is completely chilled out, something you could listen to on the beach with a good bottle of Jack (ok not the UK beaches). The guitar and bass soothing and the vocals perfectly entwining with the music.
Skipping to track 8 (Otherwise I will be writing a long essay on SIXX AM’s awesomeness) is ‘Help is On The Way’ ok, catchy again, perfect guitar riffs and bass, this band works together so well, that its impressive to know that they hardly ever get time to rehearse, what with Nikki’s busy celeb status and Motley Crue craziness. Again with the 30 Seconds to mars feeling (but a hell of a lot better) is ‘Oh My God’ a laid back track that you could listen to while cruising around in the car in summer time. The solo, my favourite off the whole album, with its 80s feel, yet not even remotely sounding like Motley Crue, amazing. Only 9 tracks in, and I can confirm that this is my favourite track.
Skipping to the last track ‘Skin’ with a quite depressing intro and the vocals equally as depressive (meh... emo cries) and if I wasn’t a metal ‘as fook’ metaller, then I’d have been crying my eyes out (hides the tissues and raises the horns) I’m metal right!!
So the second album of Sixx Am is just as Impressive as the last. Being a stupidly huge Nikki Sixx fan I was worried about listening to it, hearing crap and giving a bad review (I’d never live it down), but luckily, nothing short of amazing, I just wish they would come to the UK and do a tour!
The first track off the album ‘Lies of the Beautiful People’ is released in April.
