Artist: Vantage Point
Title: Driller Killer EP
Type: EP
Label: Unsigned

Are you fed up of the corpse painted screams of extreme metal? Does the masturbatory showing off of power metal piss you off? Do you just long for the simple metal of yesteryear that is free from all pretence, and just gets your head banging and fists punching the air? Then I think Edinburgh’s own Vantage Point has what you need!

As a taster of their classic NWOBHM influenced style, the ‘Driller Killer EP’ is a fine introduction, featuring five tracks redolent of the heyday of early Judas Priest, opener ‘Stunned’ having a simple pumping beat achieved with a classic two guitar, drums, and bass combination, some of the higher vocals of the chorus and closing scream invoking the spirit of Halford. The bizarrely entitled ‘Shetlamb, Driller Killer’ has a distinctly ‘Killers’ era Maidenesque sound to it, whilst the closing punch of ‘Motor Man’ could easily fit into Saxon’s back catalogue.

Vantage Point show that they have the ability to write catchy riffs with stomp along choruses, the raw sound of the self-financed production only enhancing the classic feel, hearkening back to an era where metal was just metal, rather then a million and one sub-genres. Treat yourself, buy it, and remind yourself what the true roots of metal are.
