With long serving godfathers of British Stoner Doom Cathedral announcing their retirement, there has been some talk about who would step forward and take up the sword and lead the movement forward. An obvious choice for many would be Witchsorrow, who with their excellent eponymous album laden with magical and historical references have set a massively high standard not only for others, but for themselves to follow up on.
All of a sudden, after barely a scant year together, Hampshire three piece XII Boar have stepped up to the line with an EP of four stoner tracks, heavy with groove, and massively influenced by the Southern tinge of Down and Crowbar. Opener ‘Train Wreck’ piles out of the speakers like an out of control engine screaming down hill, the distorted punk vocals battling against a chugging rhythm and blistering riff that tails into a doom blur. After the rocker attack of ‘Beg, Borrow, Steal’ and instrumental ‘Sludge’, the CD finishes with ‘S.K.O.L’ blessed with a Dazed and Confused cowbell, and the hardcore delivery of early C.O.C., all blended with a soporific guitar line that suddenly shakes itself awake and builds into a groove laden blast.
In four short tracks, XII Boar has thrown down a worthy challenge for the stoner metal throne.
