Laden with hooks and a distinct groove, Electric Mary from Melbourne, Australia, bring the classic rock sound bang up to date in 2009. A support slot in August in their native land with Alice Cooper should make these chaps very happy with previous touring support slots having included sharing the stage with Whitesnake, Judas Priest and further future plans with Glenn Hughes.
‘Let Me Out’ immediately “kicks out the jams” and makes you go back to a time when rock and roll was fun and timeless. In fact, the sound that you get here I do feel as if it is timeless; there is a breathing torrent of energy and this is straight ahead, balls out rock. The vocals sound like a cross between Tesla’s Jeff Keith, John Corabi (Union, The Scream, ex-Motley Crue) and some notes give you that Robert Plant ooh-baby (on ‘Sorry’) coupled with a Rod Stewart gravely rasp. Musically ‘Gasoline and Guns’ to me has a Tesla groove. The band has definitely read the “what to include in a good song” crib sheet, every piece of music has fulfilling arrangements and guitar solos that fit just right; no over the top “look how fast I can play” guitars, just earthy and wholesome. ‘One in a Million’ takes me back to hearing classic rock on the radio in the 80’s, not to say it’s a glam record or dated, some bands could learn a lot from these chaps, the running riffs in the mid-section is something that some bands don’t have the balls to do anymore, and it brings the bass out in the mix just right. It makes your feet tap and your head nod in appreciation. ‘Sorry’ is a speedy number, high octane to say the least, I would imagine this is a really good tune played live. The same can be said for ‘One Foot in the Grave’, another high energy number with balls, this could be Free jamming with Whitesnake, yes I believe it’s that good especially when it gets to ‘All Coming Down’.
I don’t find myself taking any highlights from the album; on the whole it’s a consistent album full of quality tunes with an underlying groove and melody, a complete album of highlights. Classic Rock needs these guys in the scene. If you’re in the mood for a touch of class, then check out Electric Mary, I like this album a lot; hopefully I am not alone in these thoughts, it sounds a very British affair, welcome home!
