Fitting that this latest LP from Aussie wrecking crew Denouncement Pyre has come out on Hell’s Headbangers as this really is the soundtrack to flinging one’s bonce about with furious abandon whilst bouncing happily on Lucifer’s knee. It’s relentless, snarling stuff from the opening attack of ‘Black Womb of Magdalene’ all the way through to ‘Invination of Poison’s last chilling chords. Great scything slabs of searing, thrash-tinged riffage lash from the speakers, slapping the listener around the ears and demanding attention. There’s much in common here with fellow blasphemers Destroyer 666, the same ‘wind in your hair’ whirlwind intensity and scalpel-sharpness of delivery, however Denouncement Pyre place less emphasis on stirring melody, instead darkening the mood to a tar-like thickness at times. ‘Engulfed Temples’ exemplifies this, dredging funereal chords from the abyss and kicking them screaming into unlife.
For the work of two men (principle protagonist Decaylust on vocals and guitars ably accompanied by the percussive fury of InVotan), ‘World Cremation’ is a colossal racket indeed. The key factor that raises this lot above your standard pentagram wielding shrieker though is that age-old leveller - The Song. Denouncement Pyre know how to construct a tune or two and that’s why, despite remaining pretty much flat-out on the ‘intensity-ometer’ for 35 minutes or so, World Cremation manages to maintain listener interest. There’s nary a yawn or glance at the watch as the rage continues to pour from the disc, the tracks burning their characterful riffs onto your cortex like acid, dark and misanthropic and hate-filled yet distinctively tuneful also. On this evidence, Australia has yet another act to add to an ever-burgeoning roster of ‘Grade A’ extollers of the virtues of the Horned One.
