Firax, originally from all over (according to their MySpace) only started as a band early this year. They already have a small following in their area and now they have self recorded/released their 4 track EP ‘Effigy of Hate.’
Ok so on first listen on track one ‘Effigy of Hate’ you can tell it’s Pantera inspired, it sounds a little out but still for a first demo, not so bad! The vocals are almost glammy; If I hadn’t already seen pictures of these guys I’d have to expect the vocalist would look a little Brett Michaels of Poison (sorry). Some quality riffs going on in this track, especially during the middle section, following on with a stunning solo. ‘Guild of Reapers’ didn’t impress me much; I just felt it was an ongoing noise that didn’t really change at all, and it felt like the track had possibly been rushed during writing. The third track ‘Breakdown’ blasts in with a riff to be proud of, but soon is ruined by boring squealing pinch harmonics that even the famous for his pinch harmonics ‘Zakk Wylde’ would frown upon. The final track I’m hoping will impress me a little, titled ‘Firax,’ so in we go with some awesome riffing and powerful drumming patterns, this could be a winner! The vocals pop in and surprisingly not bad at all, if just needing a bit of a push! The chorus line “Firax Firax Firax” if very cheesy; we would all be yelling this watching them at a gig down the local pub.
Trying not to be too harsh, these guys definitely have potential, a decent recording session, a bit more practice and I’d be sure to give them another try. But at the end of the day, it’s a self recorded EP so a thumbs up for that. I’d be interested in seeing what these are like live considering they have only been together as a band from early this year.
