With their motto of ‘Three Brothers – One Band’, Sons of Sounds is an independently signed three piece German act, and ‘Bound in Sound’ is a bit of a sampler for their debut album, ‘Brutality of Life’, with some bonus tracks thrown in.
Opening the EP is a cover of The Rolling Stones classic, ‘Paint It Black.’ Now, there may be some reading this that will just spit and snarl at the cliché that The Stones have become, but few can doubt their influence on the rock scene, nor the continuing impact of this song. Sadly, in covering a classic, there is the danger of sounding like an amateurish pub act, a pitfall that Sons of Sounds fall into, trying to add to the original with a few group chants of “Hey, hey, hey.” As a new act, I don’t think the band has done themselves any favours as the song just suffers by comparison to the original.
When the band start on their own material, ‘High Speed Rock & Roller Girl’ is a simple, uncomplicated garage track. Now, when I say garage, I’m not referring to the electronic dance music, but the original stuff, acts like MC5 and The Stooges who took pride in the insult of “sounding like it was recorded in a garage” and proudly displaying their minimalist sound. This same uncluttered approach carries on with ‘Troublemaker’, which opens with some laid back blues noodling before upping the speed a gear with a punkier feel.
Overall, there is nothing in this EP to dislike, beyond the ill conceived Stones cover, which for the money it must have cost them to line the pockets of Mick and Keef would have been better off left unrecorded. If you like a simple bit of rock that hasn’t been produced and auto tuned into non-existence, this might well be worth a listen.
