Artist: Amorth
Title: 2011 EP
Type: EP
Label: Self Released
This is likely to be my shortest ever review for MTUK such is the dreadful and unappealing music produced by Amorth. I heard this band’s EP during 2008 but missed out their full length, “Await Me Now”, thankfully based on this new material. The band consists of a trio of core members and a new drummer who appears on the final track which is included as a bonus for some reason. Quite why it is a bonus baffles me when the EP contains only five tracks of which the first is an intro.
Musically this is generic metalcore with the odd death and thrash riff thrown in. There are obvious breakdowns in their music which is par for the course in metalcore but where this EP falls down is the sound quality and mix. After the obligatory intro it is straight into “Treading On Dreams” and immediately the sound is hollow, dull and lifeless. There seems to be no close connection between the various instruments being played. The guitar sound is poorly produced with very little atmosphere and is devoid of intensity and power. The drum sound is far too thick on the bass kick leaving the snare hit as a minor effect lost in the muddiness of the kick drums and the bass. Vocally we get throaty snarls and growls but also clean vocals which are tepid and at times tuneless rubbish to these ears. It is difficult to be positive about any of this EP as I found it to be a bottom feeder in the realms of metalcore.
