Artist: Bad Love and Licker
Title: Bad Love and Licker
Type: E.P.
Label: Self Released
The moment my eyes latch onto the neon pink logo adorning the CD cover, my imagination drifts towards a seedy bar somewhere in Los Angeles decked out in leopard skin furniture, where scantily clad ladies fawn over a bunch of rockers with big hair and leather pants. With song titles like ‘Sleazers Palace’ and ‘Camera, action, lipstick, lights’ you get the idea this going to be a little bit trashy.
Things don’t initially seem to add up when I hit the play button, and I have to wonder if this is more of a piss-take of the whole glam thing. After a couple of listens the sleazy rock’n’roll vibe starts to become apparent in the Velvet Revolver-esque guitar licks, although these are contrasted by the brutish bellows and squawks of the aggravated vocalist, who perhaps has a bit of anger to vent from all that ‘Bad Love’.
What we have here are four tracks that roll along at a lively pace, but really needs that extra shot of vodka to give it that edge that’s sorely lacking here. Much like those lapsed memories of a night out where too much alcohol was consumed, everything kind of blends together and it’s a struggle to remember anything until one of your mates so kindly reminds you of how you made a fool of yourself on the dancefloor. Sure, the concept is kinda cool; this is sleaze for the modern generation – sleaze that’s wiped off the lipstick but kept the container in its pocket just for those moments when it wants to revert to its glammy alter ego. Bad Love and Licker just don’t seem to have the skills to deliver.
