Artist: Baphomet’s Cunt
Title: The Darkness Of British Culture
Type: Demo
Label: Self Released

A tried and tested way of getting instant notoriety for your musical project, be it rap, metal, punk, industrial or whatever genre you work in, is by pressing that tried and tested obscenity button. You do not need a run down of previous achievers but you can add a new one Baphomet’s Cunt to the list. Not only are they offensive by name but just in case you had not quite got the message, the cover for their second demo ‘The Darkness Of British Culture’ very much ties in with the theme behind it by presenting a famous portrait picture of one of our very darkest icons. In case you did not recognise her I have to take this opportunity to quote another group who courted more controversy than Baphomet’s Cunt will (hopefully) ever achieve, Crass. “It's Myra Hindley on the cover. Your very own sweet anti-mother”

Getting beneath all this and finally to the music what we have here are two tracks of black metal from a one man project The Baphomet General. He is from the UK and the one grainy negative photo on the MySpace page is somewhat familiar. Previous demo ‘Filth Pervasive’ has not touched my radar and the only other thing that this cunt has been included on is a track featured on a UK black metal compilation. I do like the idea behind first track ‘Dark British Culture’ it twists the National Anthem and Rule Britannia and warps and mangles them into the music, it must be said in a fashion that does remind of the sort of thing the Anarcho punk bands of yesterday would do. This notion is swiftly battered away when the vile and vociferous instrumentation and rasping vocals hone in. Reminiscent of early Aborym and Blacklodge perhaps this has an industrial meltdown vibe about it and is nasty, savage and full of contempt. The intent of these tracks is apparently to focus “on what makes GB a dark, lonely painfilled (sic) place for many of the inhabitants.”

It further expands upon this by making second track ‘The Lowest Dirt’ the misery compared to the first tracks hate. This has a mournful slower pace with bestial vocals howling out their disgust. Guitar sound and bass are good for demo limitations and the mix suits the mood of the music well. I am always of the opinion that a 7 minute odd demo is pretty much a waste of space and would normally dismiss out of hand. Perhaps due to the fact this was obscene black metal this escaped being flung on the ignore pile. I will certainly be interested to see where Baphomet’s Cunt go from here and wonder if they sent a copy of the demo to The Sun so the shit can really hit the fan?

There are four tracks including the two on the demo on the MySpace page, well until the family value censors there get wind of it and pull the page as they surely will.
