A little over a year ago I was introduced to Symphorce, whose latest album I enjoyed enough to have made me want to check out more from their back catalogue. Why do I mention this? Well, because Brainstorm is the main band of Symphorce vocalist Andy B. Franck, and before I even think about listening to the musical output of the band, I cannot fail to recognise the distinctive vocal style of Franck oozing out of the speakers as I hit play.
Upon first listen I’m not instantly blown away, although half a dozen spins later I find myself warming to this album. Massive sing along choruses and crunchy, powerful riffs are what it’s all about as they work with the upbeat rhythm patterns laid down on the drumkit creating some solid and exciting arrangements occasionally passing through Judas Priest territory. Thrashing rhythms are interspersed with atmospheric passages that contain an almost cosmic feel to them, and as we get to ‘End In Sorrow’ this really comes into play as a histrionic arrangement of stringed instruments surges forth as a melodic vocal line sails above before a wall of guitars really goes for the crunch.
After initially battling against my craving to hit the skip button, the Euro-rock tinged ‘How do you feel?’ begins to grow on me and soon enough I am tapping my foot along to the catchy chorus line. An inviting preamble lures me in to ‘Surrounding Walls’ which manages to hold onto my attention with its barrage of razor sharp riffs which are weaved into the orchestral tapestry filled out by ensnaring string arrangements. This is undoubtedly the highlight of the album, and one of a few tracks that make this album worth checking out.
