Satan with slay-bells these Germans work fast as fuck. It seems like only yesterday I was reviewing their rather excellent ‘Back In Blood’ (and that had an album of covers attached to it) and here they are again, continuing to kill! Looking at their back-catalogue it would appear that they have faithfully released an album a year since 2003 when they obviously inspired by Cropsy, went into the woods to ‘Kill Maim, Burn;’ lovely stuff you can almost smell the bubbling fat.
If you are looking for your music to be politically correct you should flee as fast as your fat crippled legs can take you, just looking at their merchandise there is a great new shirt up featuring a woman and a fiend with a chainsaw and a tasteful back-print boldly proclaiming “Butcher Of Bitches.” Yep this lot wear finesse like Ed Gein wore his mother’s skin and dresses.
Starting with what sounds like a sample of zombies and demonic beasts in the midst of carnage (well the album cover basically) we lurch into some nasty vomited chunk-blowing gore-grind enthused death metal. Yet this is a butchery served up with an unmistakeable groove. Although there is absolutely no cease-fire from the rolling drums on ‘Blood God Rising’ just wait till you hear the clinical guitar solo which steams out the mix intent on parting body from head.
Although it doesn’t say exactly where on the press release, apparently the group are joined by Tom Naumann (ex Primal Fear) Schmier (Destruction) and Tomasz (ex Belphegor) somewhere on this album. The vocals of singer Thomas are grizzly and blood-drenched, perfectly growling away as the instrumental attack literally puts you through the woodchipper. At first you think that perhaps the sense of fun so prolific in ‘Back In Blood’ is perhaps missing from here and then ‘Hard Rockin’ comes at you like ACDC and ZZ Top at a hoedown. Yep the unashamed worship is back in play and it sounds like a death metal band raping your Grandmother, in a word excellent.
Numbers like ‘Worship Of Killing’ with a neat chainsaw slaying intro really do speak for themselves and cover you in deep red claret. Speaking of ‘slaying’ and ‘covers’ you would need to be a very special person not to realise what ‘Slayer’s Angel Of Death’ was all about, a bone crackin,’ limb splitting version if ever I’ve heard one (and believe you me I’ve heard plenty). ‘Cuntkiller’ may well have the feminist brigade up in arms and just to prove that everyone is up for attack we have ‘Mincing Machine’ which no doubt will have the gay community equally vexed (but perhaps I got the theme of that one wrong).
Really taking the piss now ‘Metal Of Metal’ drops an clanger of an anvil (see what I did there) taking in the A Team theme as its main melody. It stumped me for a second but would have been a damn fool not to have got this in the end. As for closer ‘Walking glory Road’ there seems to even be a string section in there. So what we have here is an incredibly varied, offensive and downright cheeky death metal album what more could you possibly want?
