Artist: Djinn
Title: Oppressed by the Weak
Type: EP
Label: Self release

This self released 4 tracker from Dublin’s Djinn is one of the more and more professional appearing CDs that new acts are able to produce. From the old days of my youth where up and coming bands would have hand written and crackly tapes passed around at pub gigs, ‘Oppressed by the Weak’, with its quality sleeve and artwork, looks like it could be hot off the presses of a major label.

Likewise, the music shows a high level of production, as well as no shortage of ability. Opener ‘Iblis’, mixing thrash riffs with classic metal themes of myth and magic, set off by some nice wailing solos, is a solid introduction to the band, guaranteed to have heads banging.

Differing slightly from the printed track list, next up is ‘Sick Of It All’. With a harder edge, the vocalist growling through lyrics of desolation, over a hardcore rhythm of blasting drums and breakneck guitars, it sets the tone for the rest of the EP.

All four tracks are enthusiastically and energetically played, Djinn’s mix of thrash and hardcore, tinged with a punk attitude, should allow them to appeal to a wide range of fans who favour the heavier tones of metal.
