Artist: Doro
Title: Fear No Evil
Type: Album
Label: AFM Records

The Metal Queen releases her first new album in 3 years following two single/EP releases using tracks from this CD. What do we expect from this release? To put it into simple terms, nothing short of the usual epic ballads and rebel-rousing anthems that we are used to with a ‘Doro’ album. Upon first listen, you do have metal anthems and glorious note perfect vocal performances coupled with accomplished musicians playing their hearts out, perfect.

The drumming talents of Johnny Dee come to the forefront on ‘Caught in a Battle’ which powers along with much double kick drum flourishes. Guest vocals on ‘Walking With the Angels’ courtesy of Tarja Turunen (ex-‘Nightwish’) beef up this majestic ballad with warmth and the sincerest words. A darker lyrical content intertwines with happier times, such as that on ‘The Night of the Warlock’ and ‘Running from the Devil’, and give the album a cool light and shade flow. The production is crisp and clear, perfectly balanced.

The EP track ‘Herzblut’ (or ‘Heart Blood’ in English) is a sweet tune, although I do personally prefer the first EP released track ‘Celebrate’, simply because its more a an anthem (“let’s celebrate our love for rock and metal”) – a statement that simply cannot be argued with! It’s an album loaded with a mix of up-tempo rousing fist flyers and sweet soulful ballads, I suggest you check out Doro’s extensive back catalogue and previous bands releases, ‘Fear No Evil’ is definitely not a couch potato. ‘Doro’ shows the world of metal what an accomplished singer and songwriter she really is with mature arrangements and a distinctive twist to every tune.
