I have a confession to make; I missed these guys at Bloodstock last year due to a slight over indulgence the day before, which was helped by a fellow scribe and Jagermeister! But from what I heard whilst coming to terms with the living, it was as good as I had expected and made me wake up quick to try and catch their set.
So, their debut EP is finally unleashed, I have been waiting for this for some months now, just for something to be released. Hailing from all over the UK (Romford, Manchester, South Wales, Corby and London) and fresh from successfully touring with Thunder, festival appearances at Hard Rock Hell 2 and the aforementioned Bloodstock, there is certainly a buzz about this band. This is what you get immediately from the opening track ‘Tear Your Heart Out’. There is an instant sense of groove and good time rock ‘n’ roll spanking you sideways and filling you with thoughts of summer days partying all the time. Am I showing my age, of course not, people often forget that music is supposed to be enjoyable and fun for some parts, ‘Heaven’s Basement’ certainly are this. After a second listen, you can instantly feel at home with all the tracks, and the melodies are catchy and extremely memorable, particularly ‘Executioner’s Day’ and ‘Graduation’, they just stick in your head, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot find anything to grumble about. I suppose you could compare it to the rock ‘n’ roll ease of Thunder mixed with a bit of American grit in the form of Beautiful Creatures and Tesla. Vocals courtesy of Richie Hevanz are gritty and yet soulful, taking all the emotion of Zeppelin track and throwing it sky high and coming down as a cocktail laced with sleaze and attitude, ‘Slash’ would certainly be proud, so would Phil Lewis and Steve Riley of LA Guns, it’s hard-edged to say the least. Buzzing solo’s and bluesy ball out rocking anthems generate enough energy to allow some of the tracks to have a well deserved break in the middle of them, everyone needs to come up for air at sometime!
Look out for a headline tour later this year; bring your party shoes and the JD & coke. It is true what the band state on their website…”We're the band that will make you fall in love with Rock n' Roll all over again". I would say this is most certainly true, ‘Heaven’s Basement’ are refreshingly British and oozing with Rock ‘n’ Roll Armageddon.
