This album is the bands swansong, the final album that will be released by ‘The Hellacopters’. Having not heard this band in a few years, I was intrigued by how they would sign off their relatively short career.
The first noticeable thing is the lack of distinct “fuzz” from the guitars (the distortion for that matter), where has it gone! However, like mentioned earlier, I have not heard this band for a few years. From the first two opening tracks (‘Electrocute’ and ‘Midnight Angels’), it becomes apparent that these guys are still in the rock ‘n’ roll stage, rather than anything remotely metal. It reminds you of some early ‘Kiss’ and ‘Dogs D’Amour’ with some ‘Hanoi Rocks’ (without the glam/sleaze!) thrown in for good measure. There is a general high paced aspect of the ‘Rocky Horror Show’ soundtrack (especially with some of the piano parts). It’s a fun album, much like anything that latter day ‘Fu Manchu’ has released; they also lost the “fuzz” from their guitar sound also.
‘No Salvation’ rock outs in the form of the 1970’s, completely retro, nothing outrageous, just sleazy rock ‘n’ roll. There is no denying that these guys are proficient at what they do, the song structures are simple but effective, with appropriate bluesy guitar solos. ‘I Just Don’t Know About Girls’ and ‘Rescue’ are very infectious tracks. Still nothing out of the ordinary, but toe-tappers none the less.
The band already has festival appearances scheduled for this summer, as well as a farewell European tour. If “garage rock” interests you, then check this out. It will be the last time you shall have to opportunity to check these guys out in the studio and on the live stage.
