Artist: Mirtazapine Dreams
Title: 2 Track Demo
Type: Demo
Label: Unsigned

Somehow this really took me by surprise. You know how you inadvertently build up an impression of what a band will sound like based on the CD cover, band name and all that? Well, everything about the way this band are presented told me to expect fairly angsty, slightly twee female fronted metal; fragile doll on the cover and song titles like ‘Bitch’. And yet I couldn’t have been much further from the truth. I suppose this would be comparable to thinking you had met a really sweet girl on a dating website, only to discover that she was, in fact, a 35 year old hairy biker.

This hairy biker would no doubt frequent the most spit and sawdust pubs, where Mirtazapine Dreams would play on a regular basis. There is just that vibe about them that has pub rock written all over it; but the kind of pub rock band that would have the entire house cavorting about in a dishevelled and chaotic mass where the blokes would be rocking air guitars trying their best not to spill their pint, while the women would be dancing to the grooves. The two tracks here demonstrate a band that have a genuine spark; lively and energetic, no nonsense hard rock that you simply can’t be offended by. There is a downright dirtiness to their sound that comes off a bit like AC/DC with some catchy hooks, mean motherfuckin’ riffs and solid drum rhythms.

They got it right putting the better of the two tracks at the beginning here; ‘She’ has a wildly infectious groove that rollicks and rolls it’s way through like a monster truck! I like the gravely yet bluesy vocal tones here that have a bit of a Chris Cornel feel to them. If you enjoy a bit of good old fashioned hard rock, then you really can’t go wrong with this lot. Now time to down that pint and get another one in before last orders.
