Artist: Nashville Pussy
Title: From Hell to Texas
Type: Album
Label: SPV Records

It has been over 9 years since I last spun a CD by this band, delightfully titled ‘Let Them Eat Pussy’, during my fascination with everything “stoner” and such related sub-genres. Have the band changed at all? In short, no! They are still the same as they always were, but this album has proved to be a bit of an enigma to me.

You have nice gruff vocals from Blaine Cartwright, its boogie rock ‘n’ roll and bluesy as hell. Lyrically, it is a little dull, no I don’t want to hear the exploits of a ‘Drunk Driving Man’, this just makes me think that what is supposed to be “cool”, just simply is not. Ok so if humour is lacking in me at this point, or I have misinterpreted what is being sung about, I apologise, but I just don’t see the point; leave those ideas in the 1980’s and to sound-a-like bluesy bands like Hanoi Rocks, The Quireboys, and to the many pub bands in the land. I just don’t find the subject appealing.

It’s refreshing that Nashville Pussy appears not to take themselves too seriously; ‘Lazy Jesus’, this is just simply weird. Mouth organ laced blues just makes you feel like your in a deserted bar in the old west sipping at the whiskey bottle. ‘Ain’t Your Business’ gets things rocking again, and refreshes the pallet after a couple of bland tracks. Then the album slaps my face for my previous comments and starts to pick up, ‘Dead Men Can’t Get Drunk’ is another uplifting tune, finger bending bluesy solo’s with associated sliding runs down the fretboard beef up a foot tapping slab of southern charm. ‘Why, Why, Why’ has drunken humour in abundance (and becomes my stand out track of the album), an annoyingly catchy arrangement and that is the main theme of this album. As much as you want to hate this, there is still a little something that stops you from turning it off, hence my enigma.

The album is produced and mixed in all the right places; the cover artwork delightfully has the entire band depicted as cowboys and cowgirls. After initially thinking this album was well below par, the latter two-thirds of the CD restores a little faith, and the same lyrical theme becomes bearable, but only because the music becomes more interesting and less southern blues. To me its still not that different or great, but if you like your rock and roll infused music a-kin to The Helicopters, then this will suit you down to the ground and to the rest of you out there, it’s drinking music pure and simple.
