This is the fourth outing for this UK power metal outfit Power Quest and for me this type of metal is very much an acquired taste. I like my power metal to stand out from the rest however I don’t feel that these guys do. The album “Master Of Illusion” starts well with some very catchy tunes with the first song ‘Cemetery gates’; catchy choruses and fast solos. This is followed by the slower paced ‘Human Machine’. This isn’t too bad at all but after that the next few songs just tend to blend into each other.
That is until the sixth song “The Vigil” with which they try something different with a few shouty bits in the song which, for me, doesn’t really work. But then the album continues as it did before; catchy songs with easy to remember choruses and again as with most power metal bands they like to show of their guitar playing abilities with their solo work.
For me this album is power metal by numbers and proper power metal fans will love this album and lap it up however this will not get Power quest any new fans outside the genre. So if you like bands like Statovarious then this album is a must but if not avoid it like the plague.
