Artist: The Sorrow
Title: Origin Of The Storm
Type: Album
Label: Drakkar Records

After the obligatory intro (I do get sick of them after a while) the thrashy opening of ‘Where Is The Sun?’ with its clean cut double bass kick gave me the impression the band knows compatriots Wolfpack Unleashed very well. However the band uses the modern metalcore structure in most songs as the strong harsh snarling vocals of Mathias are tempered by the very clean variety which you either love or hate. On this release I would have preferred the band to keep the snarl throughout but I suspect the need for recognition by the modern metal teenage brigade has clinched the deal. This is not a bad thing if your music is likely to be accepted in that genre but overall tracks like ‘My Immortal Guardian’ or ‘Scars’ are far more punishing than the bands they are attempting to take business away from. The music veers from the modern thrash of a band like Susperia to an Arch Enemy style beat occasionally.

The playing ability is undeniably very good as each song has enough riffing and aggression to prevent it from being lumped into the pop metal genre with only the vocals diluting the power of the songs. The slower rasping start of ‘Raising The Devil’ is upbeat and bouncy whereas ‘Anchor In The Storm’ has an emotional riff with a subtle lead layered over it which I enjoyed. If you can forgive the clean vocals this album packs a good metallic crunch, as on ‘Heaven Is No Place For Us’, as each track uses a good variety of riffs and melodies making it very accessible overall. However if you do not like clean metalcore style vocals avoid this like the plague.
