As if his Balrog and Aosoth projects weren’t enough, Sebastian Tuvi (also Aborted guitarist and Genital Grinder mainman) has found another French Black Metal outfit to contribute to; although in this instance providing just the bass lines and drum programming, while I.nR (also a live guitarist for Aosoth) is VI’s main composer and lyricist.
Unfortunately this fell a bit short of the mark, mainly due to a rather bland first song and despite many repeated listens (each time convincing myself that it would suddenly spring out and impress me no end), failed to live up to the rest of the release.
‘Et maintenant je lui appartiens ainsi ma chair mon sang et mes actes lui sont dedies’ (seriously, that’s the title - they become longer too!) just drifts by, doing nothing particularly interesting for its duration. Church chant samples from the Kremlin in Moscow don’t add anything remarkable to the listening experience whatsoever and all in all, feels quite flat and meandering.
The ‘feeling’ begins to pick up on ‘Je me dresse devant le trone et jattends mon jugement en crachant sur le livre de vie’, but it’s really not until ‘Si le sommeil de me raison se fait trop lourd, je deviendrais le monster qu’il aura tente d’engendrer’’s turn that the riffs are honed into those with standout chords and tones. The dynamics and flow improve a great deal too, beseeching ones ears to accept their raw and morbid patterns.
‘Il n’y a pas repos ni le jour ni la nuit pour ceux qui ont adore la bête et son image et pour quiconque a recu la marquee de son nom’ is probably the highlight of the EP, decanting an (un)healthy dose of raw blasting upon the Kremlin choir. The riffs here take on an unprecedentedly memorable status, and it really is as if the second half of the EP has had much more thought put into it than the first. It’s a shame really, but hopefully if an album follows it will be more in the vein of the latter half.
