Disfigured Dead are a young new band from New York State formed in 2008. Intrigued by their marketing material that has pretty much hit the nail on the head, I had to hear this. If you like your death metal old school and American, this will be a treat for you. There is heritage in this package, fans of Autopsy, some Swedish Death metal, but mainly early Death (‘Scream Bloody Gore’ album) will truly take this release as a master class. Death (the band) features very heavily when ‘Mentally Mutilated’ belts out of the stereo, almost singing like Chuck (of Death), the fast paced guitar riff intertwines with some low end horror of the kind that just makes you want to stomp around the area you are listening to this incessantly whilst being kept on edge with the harmonics coming during the riffs.
‘Screamatorium’ is another belting tune, Autopsy would be proud of them and I do feel the students have becomes the masters, a great compliment to Disfigured Dead. There are 12 tracks of amazing death metal on offer here, its hard to pick a favourite, the two tracks I have mentioned earlier are pretty much my choice. Lyrics typically deal with gore, horror and death, you would not want it any other way in this genre. There are no bum notes, especially during the solos; their craft is pretty sleek and fine tuned, so there are no worries there. The album artwork looks to be a classic gore ridden tale of pain and fire; you know this is an old school death metal band when you see this. On the whole, it’s simply a terrific album and I could repeat myself over and over again in complement, but in short, you need to hear this.
Disfigured Dead are a great new band and ‘Visions of Death’ is one of my top releases in recent times. I have played this album to death (no pun intended!). A brutal assault of classic American Death Metal, Disfigured Dead have been to school and have got straight A-grades without seemingly any effort. This is a top class release and a welcomed addition to the death metal army.
