I don’t know many metallers that actually like SFU, apart from myself of course, though my dedication to their music has been severely challenged in recent years. The bands obsession with covers albums sees the release of the third “Graveyard Classics” album which contains a mix of covers rather than the total slaughtering they gave AC/DC’s “Back In Black” album some six years ago or so. This time there is a bigger mix of songs and some fit within SFU’s death ‘n’ roll heaviness better than others.
The Mercyful Fate cover passed me by as I dislike MF with vengeance as the band then tackles “Metal On Metal” (Anvil) and do a decent job in chopping it to pieces and pulping it into a mess. “The Frayed Ends Of Sanity” (Metallica) fairs better such is the songs deeper tone, though Barnes’ guttural drawl is difficult to digest at times. The bands version of “At Dawn They Sleep”, once again fits better as the song is heavier. SFU completely annihilate “Not Fragile” (Bachman Turner Overdrive), 3 Inches Of Blood’s version of the same song is better and at least manages to retain some inkling of the original structure and feel.
It is fair to say that covering the straight metal songs is pointless unless you’re into this just for a laugh. The vocal belching that adorns “Pounding Metal” (Exciter) I guess works, just, but only because the song is heavy enough to withstand the SFU ripping onslaught, as is the cover of Twisted Sister’s “Destroyer” which has been covered many times elsewhere. With little experience of the last 2 songs it is difficult to pass judgement but suffice to say the guitars are heavy, the vocals gurgle along contentedly as does the rumbling bass work. If you wanna laugh and have not heard this bands previous cover album belches then this one just may tickle your laughter zone, or not as the case may be.
