Artist: Trident
Title: World Destruction
Type: Album
Label: Regain Records
Formed my ex-members of Dissection (Johan Norman) and current Necrophobic members Tobias Sidegard and Alex Friberg, this is something of a satanically heavy release. Whilst the bands entire heritage is present, they tend to lean towards more of the Dissection sound on this new release ‘World Domination’. After listening to the album a few times, I am suckered into their world and each time you listen you gain a different appreciation for the torrential whirlwind music of Trident. The drumming on the album title track is some of the fastest snare work I have heard in a while, and I listen to a lot of grind. Wondrously atmospheric in all parts of the CD, I still have yet to find anything to criticise about the production, the arrangements the whole package really (apart from some of the mp3 files not playing of course!). ‘Jaws of Satan’ vocally has the Swedish death metal approach; some cool sweeping guitar work interlays its infectious disease amongst the icy black metal riffwork associated with the aforementioned band.
Some of the tunes are shorter in length, but you also get those 5 to 7 minute plus epic arrangements. Nothing that you will hear will strike you as out of the box different, however, as a package this works especially well. Striking cover artwork adorns this release also, an apocalyptic vision courtesy of Marcelo of P2R Design whom are responsible for their work with Belphegor and Vader, to name but a few. There is talk of a live tour in 2010, lets hope this comes to these shores, this might be quite a cool spectacle live. ‘Luciferian Call’ does what the title suggests, the pounding drumming and frantic riffs give rise to a torrent of angry aggression with a strong sense of melody in its madness, and for me my favoured approach of these black/death metal hybrid bands. Other than the fact this is a quality release by some talented guys, there is the horror and madness of Swedish black metal together with the aggression of the death metal genre and a heavy reliance of those bands no longer with us (as I have said earlier), but what I can say is that this album does grab you by all senses and makes you want to listen to it intently and one album that I would recommend as a no-brainer purchase in the next few weeks.
