INTERVIEW WITH HEADRUSH

If good old fashioned rock and roll is your poison then turning away now may be one of the most foolish things you could possibly think about doing. Headrush are a band heading down the right road to success with their unique winning fusion of 80’s glam metal and hard rock with a contemporary sound. With a debut album release lurking around the corner, the album has already received fantastic response from the press, being likened to Motley Crue, Twisted Sister and Guns ‘n’ Roses and they recently received the coveted “Demo of the month” in Classic Rock magazine. I ask guitarist Chris “The Tramp” Khosa how the band feels about the response they have had so far.

“Yeah we are getting some rave reviews right now, I thought we should get good reviews but in the current musical climate I wasn’t too sure, so its nice to see that people are getting what we are all about!”

Although it is easier to compare their style to those bands that were at their prime in the 1980’s, it is not to say that they are stuck in a time warp and that no-one under a certain age will be able to appreciate them. As I ask if they try to recreate the sound of the 80’s, I am proven wrong.

“We don’t try to recreate anything to be honest. A lot of People assume we are an 80’s style band but we are not, we are just a Hard Rock Band. If people want to make that comparison then its upto them I guess, we see ourselves more as a Timeless Rock band”.

The debut single is released on January 16th and will be available through HMV and I Tunes. The single, entitled “Livin’ In A Fantasy” is the title track taken from the album of the same name. With it’s fun lyrics, the part-autobiographical song sums up exactly what rock and roll should be about! If you are looking for political subjects or “Woe is me” lyrics riddled in self-pity, then this song may not be what you are looking for.

“It’s basically about a regular guy who is sick of his life and wants to become a rock star and live out all his fantasies. Kinda partly inspired by our own lives really! Its an upbeat full steam ahead rocker with some great vocals and hooks, and even some Slide guitar as well as Two killer solos and a chant vocal at the end!”

Headrush may not wish to be labelled as an 80’s style band, although it is hard not to note a few similarities with the likes of Motley Crue, LA Guns and Poison as far as the music goes, so I can only wonder how their attitudes stand up to the bad boys of rock, and ask if they are all about the sex, the drugs and the rock ‘n’ roll.

“We all get sex of course! Haha! We don’t go out trying to score with every girl that has a heartbeat (yet, save that for fame!) although most offers are openly accepted! And we all drink, some more than others depending on whos driving that night (we need a Tourbus driver any applications?!) Nobody does drugs, we don’t really feel the need,” he continues. “Rock’n’Roll is our drug, no matter how cheesy that may sound”.

A video has also been made for the single. Filmed at the Victoria Hall, which is a 1400 capacity hall in the bands hometown of Stoke (birthplace of Lemmy and Slash, as they point out), the venue is renowned for being one of the best acoustic halls in the country.

“We had a company called TunnelVizion Media shoot it” Chris informs me. “They recently shot a documentary on The Drifters, it went well, we just had to keep miming to the track about 40 times! Got Very Hot in there! But it was fun, the vid has come out pretty good!”

If you head over to the band’s myspace you will see a healthy list of tourdates for 2007, as the year will see Headrush haul themselves across the UK and maybe even further a field.

“Yeah I can’t wait, we will be playing in Norway, Germany, Sweden, Ireland, the USA and hopefully other places too. The organisers of Clive-aid (The Charity for Clive Burr the Ex-Iron Maiden Drummer) will be helping us out with a lot of the gigs”

The band will be trailing up and down the country to get their music out to as many audiences as possible, so if they are plying at a venue near you, make sure you head along to watch. The band tells us what makes their live show so appealing.

“For anyone expecting to come see us, I’d say expect a Loud and Upbeat Fun Rock show, similar to what you’d get if you went to see AC/DC, Aerosmith or Kiss (except without Blow up Characters and Pyro, we ain’t rich yet!)”

Headrush have already been quite a success where live gigging is concerned, having sold out local gigs in their home town of Stoke, and played support to Terrorvision, The Quireboys, and Hayseed Dixie. The band also played a number of charity gigs in aid of Cancer Research, raising a substantial amount of money for the charity.

“I enjoyed supporting The Quireboys” Chris says, when prompted to recall a favourite live experience. “They are a really good band and we played a great show that night, we also played some good shows with Pretty Boy Floyd and Hayseed Dixie at the AC/DC Big Ball. One of my favourites was playing the Bulldog Bash as it was cool to play outdoors and on a big stage!”

As well as playing the Bulldog Bash, Headrush entered a competition to play at Download 2006. Whilst they did not win, their music can still be found on the official Download myspace music player. When I ask if they will be playing at any festivals in 2007, they tell me that there is a chance of them playing at Bloodstock 07 although there is nothing confirmed yet!

As I thank Chris for his time, he leaves me with one final note.

“We’d be totally grateful if you could all go out there and buy our single! It’s available on iTunes from Jan 15th and also for pre-order on hmv.co.uk”
