Artist: Deathbound
Title: Non Compos Mentis
Type: Album
Label: Dynamic Arts Records

Deathbound came to my attention with their third album We Deserve Much Worse, released back in 2007. That album was an explosive piece of sonic violence but after some tour dates alongside grind godfathers Napalm Death the band slipped into a period of silent hibernation. The world was a quieter place without them – and no, that’s not a good thing. There was a 7” split with Coldworker last year that gave us hope and now those hopes are realised.

The new decade begins with a new full length of punishing death metal/grindcore from the bulldozing Deathbound. For just three guys Kai (vocals), Pete (guitar) and Sami (drums) make an absolutely devastating racket and Non Compos Mentis will not disappoint any longstanding Deathbound fan – or in fact anyone looking for utter aural apocalypse. Just check out the blasting inferno of ‘The Process Of Destruction’ – it’s enough to shake loose your teeth and rupture your spleen at the same time. The sound is thick and heavy as molten lead, the riffs catchy, memorable and probably lethal if exposed to too frequently, the vocals are the sound of an insane gorilla in attack mode and the sheer velocity is terrifying. In short, it’s everything I was hoping for.

If you’re a sucker for the likes of Napalm Death, Nasum or Rotten Sound but have yet to sample the delights of Deathbound then now is the time to jump aboard this out of control train. For existing devotees, well, it’s everything you wanted it to be. A warm welcome back to one of the most brilliantly brain bruising bands out there!
