Artist: Fischel’s Beast
Title: Commencement
Type: Album
Label: Stormspell Records

This band is a continuation born out of the demise of that classic US band Sentinel Beast. Barry Fischel was one of the original founding members and guitarists. ‘Commencement’ represents what would have been Sentinel Beasts second album had they continued recording. The good news is that tracks written by Debbie Gunn (original SB vocalist) and Michael Spencer are sanctioned and Barry has been able to release and put together a stunning classic US power metal release.

‘Forbidden Territories’ starts the album out proper and what a cracking tune it is, all up-tempo and as you would expect, similar to the style of his former band. There are two jewels on this album, firstly a guest appearance of Chris Caffery (Savatage) on guitars and the vocal talents of one Anthony Cross. Sounding like a mix of David White (Heathen) and many a classic singer such as Neil Turbin, John Bush, Matt Barlow and all the greats, this is a perfect real metal vocal delivery. The high range, the low range and the general melody is simply old school to the max. The production even sounds authentic too. Soaring solos and riffs are in abundance, especially those displayed in the mid section to ‘The Phoenix’. The 7-String, yes, I said 7 strings, bass of Mauriello makes up for the single axe attack in more ways that you can mention. ‘One Man’s Cry’ strays into more thrash territory penned by Barry himself, this is once again a display of power and might, all the elements are here, time changes, riffs, did I mention the riffs? It is certain that our European cousins will relish and adore this album, its classic metal to the max and a breath of fresh air in a sometimes-stagnated marketplace. As I caught Sentinel Beast live at Keep It True X in Germany, I feel I must see Fischel’s Beast live too, one hopes this will happen soon!

At a little over 34 minutes, some albums have been shorter, but my god, what a return to form this music is and I still love this with every spin of the CD player. Classic Metal as it should be, the American’s were always bloody good at this, and Fischel’s Beast are a perfect example of metal music that keeps the hair on the back of your next stand on end and you head nod in appreciation. ‘Commencement’ is a perfect metal release in my book, go on, check them out, and buy this release!
