Artist: The Rocket Dolls

Some facts for you, before you make the decision to sit around and read the rest of the review. The Rocket Dolls are fronted by a man who calls himself “Nikki Smash”. Their influences include Silverchair, The Deftones, Bush and Motley Crue. They stand ready for “World Domination”.

Ok, if both of you who remain could pay close attention, I’ll try and whiz my way through the rest of the review. Simply put, this is post-grunge rock that leans heavily on the power of the simple riff, done well. Yes, the songs here are fairly derivative of the style and have that classic “heavy bit / quiet bit” dynamic that has persisted since the earliest incarnations of Nirvana, and yes, this could well be the soundtrack to rebellion for affluent twelve year olds in between doing their latin homework. There are some elements of sleazy rock in the greasy guitar sound and the swagger of “Bleeding the Shame” (and no, I didn’t make that song title up), and the subsequent anthemic chorus. If I sound a little tongue in cheek, it’s because the grunge rock thing (that “killed” metal * snigger * ) sounds a bit 1997, despite any attempts at a modern, punchy production – and the production here is enviably professional.

Ach, by now I’m writing to myself. Is this a bad release? No, not really – it’s a solid, fairly likeable chunk of rebellious rock that’s going to appeal to the barely pubescent demographic. For those of us of a more…erm…metal bent, this is likely to pass us by. Sorry lads, not really my bag – but good luck all the same. Oh, and should you attain “World Domination”, don’t judge me too harshly! I think you’re good at what you do, it’s just not what I suspect our readership will be seeking.
