Cultfinder, a newly formed group from Farnborough, features two members of Witchsorrow, but sounds nothing alike; instead the band admits off-the-bat that they are a Nifelheim-worshipping black/thrash outfit!
This demo has been recorded with a 4-track after only a few rehearsals as a full band and released on tape… and that is precisely how it should be. Listening to this demo on mp3 doesn’t even come close to the tape experience, capturing the rawness that comes with the four-track recording. The overall package brings back to mind why the whole black/thrash thing was great to begin with, which is something that seems long forgotten. With bands using polished productions and losing touch with their own essence (as I would say Nifelheim did on ‘Envoy of Lucifer’), it’s great to hear a band doing it as it should be done – minimalistic rehearsal recording (that doesn’t suck).
The four tracks on this demo are a tremendous 15 minute tour-de-force, kicking out songs with very Nifelheimish structures and the same sort’a balls as in their earlier work. The songs have catchy choruses and some, if not exactly inventive, excellent headbanging black/thrash riffs. Obviously nothing new is being invented here, neither is it the-next-big-thing, but that’s not something Cultfinder pretend to do. It is unpretentious and honest worship of a killer metal-sub-genre that has lacked ideas in recent history. I for one and really looking forward where this project goes from here and checking it out live! The demo is available for a pound online, so no excuses!
