For many years, amongst other things, English has been the international language of shipping and air traffic control, doubtless legacies first of the British Empire, and then the influence of America. Likewise, metal, with its roots arguably in England before being hijacked by the States, has been predominantly sung in English. It’s only in recent years that acts singing in their native tongue have broken out from the confines of their own country.

Italian based and Greek named Adamas stick to putting out their own style of blackened thrash in English, perhaps hoping for wider recognition then they may have found at home, and to this end have put out the 4 track EP ‘Exarco’. Opener ‘The Cradle of Judas’ powers in with heavy dark riffs, layered with the swirling keyboards, vocalist Faithful Father growling out against religion, his vocals stopping just short of the unintelligible croaks of more extreme bands. This may not satisfy any listener who has painted their face into a black and white approximation of an unwell badger, but it suits me just fine.

Track 2, ‘Into the Fit’ is a far more traditional foray into Maidenesque metal, again augmented by prominent and symphonic synths, the breakneck solos and riffs making a respectful nod to NWOBHM, whilst follow up ‘Revenge’, has a power metal sound, just lacking the operatic vocals of that genre to stop it getting too pigeon holed. Closing this CD is ‘Baghdad Singin’ In The Raid’, a none too subtle anti-war dig.

As a very new, and looking at some of the members, very young band, Adamas have shown considerable skill in bringing different metal influences together.
