Angrepp are Swedish and in their own language their name means ‘assault.’ Their debut album cover for ‘Warfare’ has a tank and a soldier blasting a fallen foe who is hurling a Christian cross in the air as his last act. True to form the album starts with an intro of rapid fire armament before we get to things properly. I think you can easily get the picture here; this is something that pretty much speaks for itself. As for the following nine numbers I guess what we have is best described as punked up thrash with beefy vocals and a lot of anger and determination behind it all. The drumming is impressive from the off and it should be as Fredrik Widigs seems to have played in a fair few acts in his time, although none of them are exactly household names.
‘Five Horned Formation’ marches on in an unrelenting fashion, pace wise it might not hit the heady heights of Swedish D-beat but if it went much faster it would certainly be getting there. This is a more drawn out affair with songs given time to breathe and even the odd flailing solo cropping up. There are times when the guitars chug away with the throaty vocals reminding a bit of the likes of Pro-Pain with a punk and hardcore swagger, the crusty feel is also there and perhaps it is no mere coincidence that this is (probably) placed next to my review of Amebix and there is a song called ‘Legions Arise.’ There is plenty in the way of swaggering melody and ‘Dead And Destroyed’ cuts a jubilant march, roughshod and ready and as for ‘Rape Kill Rock n’ Roll’ it’s just another example of stating the obvious as to where exactly this lot are coming from.
After giving this quite a few spins in the name of reviewing it, I have to admit that although ‘Warfare’ pretty much does what it sets out to do there is little that is going to draw me back to it. There are plenty of other classic albums of this style vying for my attention as it is and although Angrepp have done a good job and provided a solid 40 minute album it’s done in a tried and tested format that does little to separate from an already overpopulated herd. Oh and I have no idea why people on the bands MySpace such as Dan Swano (who is behind the solid production) and other reviewers are citing black metal and namedropping bands like Emperor?
