My first introduction to Danzig was on a rather dodgy summer rock compilation tape which I got free from Tower Records in Glasgow back in the early 90s. On this tape was a lot of soft rock, and at the very end was a very dark and out of place song titled ‘Long Way Back from Hell.’ From this moment I knew Danzig was worth checking out. The song ended up on many a compilation tape I have made myself over the years, but me being lazy it wasn’t until many years later that I purchased any of the albums. I am now the owner of many of his albums with the first two being my favourites; I even got the last album Circle of Snakes, which I must confess I was rather disappointed with.
Now Danzig is back with his first album in 6 years, Deth Red Sabaoth - to be honest, I find the title a bit naff. Not being the most reliable writer, Luci asked me to review this in only a couple of days and after a bit of overkill listening, I find myself enjoying what is probably Danzig’s best album in many years. Time warp back to his early stuff and all songs would fit well on either the self-titled Danzig and Lucifuge albums. I don’t think there is anyone else who comes close to singing like Glen does, with a very dark and bluesy sound which can at times make you shudder. When I first heard ‘On a Wicked Night’ which was previewed on facebook, I wasn’t sure - I thought the slow intro was going to drag on a bit but it manages to kick in just in time not to annoy the hell out of the listener and after a few listens it really grows on you.
For me the best track and most catchy has to be ‘The Revengeful,’ with is funky guitar work and faster pace this will in time become a classic or it should be. What you have here is 11 songs of Danzig doing what he does best. There are no surprises, but it should please any fan of his early stuff, and for any new listeners this is a good place to start. I for one will be buying the album on CD since this was on a download - damn you record companies making me part with my hard earned cash but it will be worth every penny!
