Artist: Krass-T
Title: Le Jour du Saigneur
Type: Demo
Label: Self-Released

This French band, formed in 2003, brandish their self-proclaimed deathcore/thrash upon us. This demo ‘Le Jour du Saigneur’ (‘The Day of the Slaughterer’ for the English speakers amongst us) is the first representation of this group. Recorded over a period of 12 months, this shows, and this is my first gripe. The quality of the recording is somewhat lacking up to the track ‘Starifie’ (i.e. the first 4 tracks). The bass and drums sound very muddy and the guitars have been compressed to the max instead of allowing the natural sound to come out, the underlying mechanised-sounding element is so prevalent. Another stopping point for me is, although lyrics are included, I don’t understand a thing I am listening too and I do feel that lyrics are important in music. It just provides a limitation that may not be unduly warranted.

There are elements of thrash in the music coming through, but how this has anything to do with the brutal deathcore assault that comes with it is another factor altogether; its kind-of works but then it just makes some areas sound disjointed. There are a few jazz influences creating a bit more of a buzz than the death-metal-by-numbers approach on most of the tracks. The clinical breaks in the music try to sound just like that of Cardiac Arrest or a very second rate Devourment whilst trying to give you a shock vocal performance of early Gorerotted. It’s just not that original and the weak production does not give it the kick up the arse that it needs, but then this is a demo recording and you have to weigh this up when making comments about production qualities. For me ‘The Patriot’ gives the best show on this release, there are ideas-a-plenty, but that’s not necessarily a good thing in one tune.

On the whole, it’s not a bad listen; it’s just not that different to what is already out there today. Singing in their native language is going to make things even harder for Krass-T to break through into an already crowded scene.
