Artist: Jettblack
Title: Get Your Hands Dirty
Type: Album
Label: Spinefarm Records
For me, it is refreshing to hear bands like Jettblack whom have a complete disregard for some of the nonsense that came out in the nineties and noughties. So it’s old you say? No, whilst it’s basic rock and roll, this debut album is like a good party in full swing and a source of entertainment, melody with good song writing and without a pure retro attraction. From the opener ‘Slip it On’ to the radio rousing anthem (and future single) of ‘Two Hot Girls’ (coming out of the sun apparently!) this is a band intent on making you feel young and innocent. While in some respects it’s sleazy in lyrical content, the arrangement and especially the vocals (courtesy of Jon Dow) are majestic. I do get the idea this guy likes Sebastian Bach’s style, he has got that number nailed down to perfection. Ok there are clichés galore (‘When it Comes to Lovin’ for example), but it takes me back to an innocent time of music, without any kvlt snobbery. Flourishes of real metal come out in ‘Mother Fucker’ and just to say they are not just a glam band! Steel Panther were amateur wannabes, without musical talent, Jettblack have the musical talent and the ability to fulfil their promotional “stadium rock” credentials. Forget Poison and the posers that were two-a-penny, think more credible musicians like Cinderella and Michael Monroe (some of you are laughing now aren’t you!). It may have an 80’s feel to it, but there is no make up or any of that sugar coated stuff, these Brits know how to make a catchy, memorable tune or 11 and this is the focus of ‘Get Your Hands Dirty’.
You won’t find a pounding assault of drums, or a rip roaring technical wank-a-thon on guitar, you will hear a band doing what they do best; entertain. One hopes you checked these chaps out at download (acoustic set unfortunately) right before Skin. Jettblack’s spirit is rock and roll - what a debut album, what a band!
