Artist: Pussy Sisster
Title: Pussy Sisster
Type: Album
Label: Black Bards Entertainment
The Black Bards label has become synonymous with folk-influenced metal, and so Pussy Sisster seem an odd choice for their roster. Not a bad choice, just unexpected. There is not a flute, not a fiddle, not an epic warrior’s tale to be found here; it’s clear from the first note that these Germans are all about big hair, bigger tits and huge choruses. Yup, bring on the sleaze… I can go two ways with this style of music – I’m not the biggest fan but it can be good fun in the right context. I’ve seen Motley Crue live, I’ll have you know. And when Twisted Sister headline BOA I shall most likely whip out my air guitar if I’m sufficiently drunk, which I hope to be. And if the ‘Sister are your thing, then so too should the ‘Sisster.
The album gets off to a strong start with ‘Today,’ which comes rocking in with a brazen swagger; taking an occasional swig from the JD bottle as it does. There vocals are particularly good, reminding me a lot of Vince Neil, and have that air of self-confidence that will have an army of groupies screaming and banging at the door. Even on ‘Born Again;’ a ballad Bon Jovi would be proud of, the vocal delivery is quite ballsy and manages not to veer into that wet, sappy terrain that some vocalists just can’t seem to resist.
While this nods unashamedly back to 1980’s Sunset Strip, it has a slightly modern edge to it that stops it from sounding too much like a throwback. ‘In Your Arms’ somehow has me thinking of Wednesday 13, with its rollicking groove and heavy metal riffage this one makes you wanna rock, and its chorus is especially memorable. ‘Way To Nowhere’ is much lighter in tone, and has a radio friendly pop-punk vibe that actually doesn’t sound too out of place. ‘Pussy Sisster’ comes at you with a heavy, rolling bass while there are some classic sleazy licks writhing in the mix rather like a buxom blonde in a g-string strutting around a metal pole. The choruses are simple and catchy, with lyrics like “No, No, We will never stop!” it’s designed to get as many people singing along as possible.
All in all this is an enjoyable record, full of catchy tunes, heavy riffs and sing-along choruses. If you like your girls easy and your metal sleazy (and a little cheesy) then you’ll love this.
