Artist: Nailgun Massacre
Title: Backyard Butchery
Type: Album
Label: Slow Runner Records

Well, I’ve got no idea if I’m going to like the music yet, but let me go on about the awesome artwork a bit first before I get to the CD. The entire layout actually… it’s covered in killer full-colour gore images reminiscent of old horror movies and Troma-esque brutality. Sleaze ‘til death! Well done for Slow Runner Records for producing this high quality full-colour product (being their first release and all)! It even comes with a big nail.

The album is called Backyard Butchery and the label’s press-sheet kindly asks for someone with an interest in old-school Death Metal such as Autopsy to review this. Well that suits me just fine, Autopsy happen to be one of my favourite bands of all time and I just finished reviewing their new album. So these guys are up against the fathers of the genre here… let’s see how they do.

As for the music: This is Old School Death Metal to the bone!

Nailgun Massacre is a quite curious entity as the band consists of the “most notorious undead veterans” of the Dutch metal scene, who, however, do not want to make themselves known. What makes all this even more curious is that Master Speckmann makes an appearance on a number of the tracks.

Autopsy is a key word here for sure, as are Impetigo, old Swedish Death Metal and even Tom G. Warrior’s bunch of bands. The guitars essentially carry elements of the Coralles/Cutler repertoire (those delicious trademark leads!). The production also fits this music very well, it’s not polished but keeps that sense of dread and menace that’s mostly been replaced by clean and modern production nowadays. Excellent work! The vocals are of the most old school style as well, no pig squeals here. The back of the CD cover also sports a ‘no blast-beats’-sign, which is a welcome change from the norm. Lyrics are the usual gore mixed with a pinch of humour.

It’s not a monumental release and won’t blow your socks off, but for fans of the above-mentioned bands it’s definitely a good listen, maybe sometimes bit too much ‘fun’ for my taste, but the song-writing and riffing makes up for it.
