Artist: Thy Bleeding Skies
Title: Autumn Souls
Type: Album
Label: Whirlwind Records

Swirling the dial on an old analogue radio would give you pretty much the same static and jumping from station to station you get on the intro to "The Chaos That Comes", but once the drums and guitars sweep in you know this is going to be an epic ride. They are perfectly capable of playing both slow and heavy tracks with intricate and slowing leads like on "The Breed of Tragedies and Fears" and faster and even heavier tracks like "Memories". There are times when I think I'm listening to 'The Fourth Dimension' during "Autumn Souls" as Claudio Enzler's vocals vary from death to clean to harsh again.

"Gonna Be A Bad Day" is an acoustic number which builds slowly to become "The Inner Aspect" where JJ Kontoniemi's snare sound is a little tinny and I think it would sound far better if it was more sharp and cutting. The guitars are a subtle undertone with the vocals high in the mix for "The Fallen One", then when they are blended back in, the drums up the pace a little 'til the lead takes over and the steady time signature returns. Not sure why, but the bouncy chorus on "When All Is Said and Done" is very poppy, but in a death metal pop way, rather than synth pop. I guess it's the simple meme quality that the guitar riff has, as you keep hearing it and the chorus long after the song has stopped playing. I think that "In Endless Dreams Everything Dies" is a beautiful track. It's morose and its tempo just adds to its surreal quality, as do the clean vocals on the verses, while the death vocals on the chorus make things nice and heavy. There's a catchy quality to the vocals melody on "The Sky Still Bleeds", while the lead has a melody that carries it on a different path, a more haunting one at that.

A great album here from this German band with Swedish overtures with plenty of fine guitar-man-ship from all three guitarists Claudio Enzler, Oliver Grosshans and Wolfgang Nillies, along with Thorsten Brandt on the bass.
