As a practically married woman, I am more than familiar with the male NoFuck syndrome; symptoms include grouchiness, tantrums, sulking, aggression, oh, and did I mention sulking? Yes, having suffered more than my share of “Oh, woe is me! I am so deprived and unloved. Screw (no pun intended) solving world hunger, I JUST WANT A SHAG!” speeches, I am aware that it only takes a few days of celibacy to turn even the gentlest of men into pig-headed Neanderthals. But anyway. Put all of these emotions into something as productive as writing an album, as opposed to wallowing in self pity, and you could be onto something rather good.
When no-one came forth to grab this CD (perhaps through fear that their wives would see and the name would give them bad ideas) I was left with the (no)fucking thing on my mountainous review pile, and found myself pleasantly surprised. You can instantly get a feel of that pent up aggression and frustration in the vocals, which are projected with a nice growl without being too cookie-monster-esque. The closest comparison I find myself making is to Max Cavalera; with a similar primitive rawness that comes across in his delivery. Guitars are struck with a chugging heaviness that is delivered at a thrashy pace, especially on ‘Australian Girl,’, and on tracks like ‘Shattered Dreams’ there is a death-tinged delivery that simply steamrolls you into the ground.
This is not for pussies; there are plenty of balls behind the musical output here, even if said balls aren’t getting any action. ‘In Hail’ really makes me want to bang my head, and there is something Deathly about the chorus here that has me thinking of Leprosy, and is just as infectious. Much like ‘Roots’ era Sepultura, this strikes me as being rather on the monotonous side, but it is a solid album nonetheless and as a debut album this shows a considerable amount of promise.
