Artist: Point-Blank
Title: Execution
Type: Demo
Label: Self Released
The first demo, “Gatling Gun Manifesto”, released by these thrashing deathsters from Finland was a competent and adventurous release showcasing a band finding its feet. Some six months later shows the band has decided to focus primarily on the thrashy death metal rather than the sombre Katatonia inflections that made sporadic appearances on the debut demo. Once again the CD begins with gun fire and shouts before a trundling double bass kick set to a rasping guitar tone comes in. The vocals have a hardcore bark on “Death March” but the tone is still quite guttural overall. The tendency for the riffs to edge into melodic territory is a safe move that makes this and all the songs very accessible.
The title track ups the momentum a tad with a focus on death metal rhythms that adds chunkiness. I feel there is an industrial lean on the sound that gives the song mechanical style heaviness. I enjoyed “While You Bleed” as the band adopts a heavy deathrash while “Harvest of Death” begins with a straight metal riff and double bass kick as the band set to work with plenty of time changes and equal numbers of riffs to balance them. Overall the songs are worthy of checking out but I suspect this bands songs would be far more killer live than on CD.
