This 16.5 minutes of old school death madness has been on my list of must buys for a while, anticipating its release with baited breath, so was the wait worth it? Damn right. Formed in 1997 in Dallas, Texas, there are many older influences in there, especially on ‘With Venomous Tongues’.
The first of the 5 tracks ‘Served Cold’ brings in the old guard with its constant bombardment of up-tempo nastiness. There is some early Nihilist worship in the form of ‘1911’, that works well without being a copycat, there are enough ideas and vocal interpretations to make this stand out on its own, even the sound of a beer can opening in the middle of the track makes you wake up and take note. The main basis of the sound is from Sweden, good old fashioned Swedish Death metal, what more could you ask for? The problem you do get with this genre is that it is all very much the same, meaning there are good bands and there are terrible bands. RPB are the former thankfully, holding together the tunes much like that of Dismember’s back catalogue without the melodic interludes, truly amazing. There is no wonder though when you have Richard Cabeza on bass (ex-Carbonized, Dismember, and General Surgery)
‘Faith of the Blind’ boasts lyrically “rape your own mind”, it does make you chuckle but that is exactly what these tunes do to you. I did not stop nodding my head and banging the table when available throughout this debut release. Many bands try to encapsulate this sound, but they don’t have the budget or the talent to rise above a garage band, RPB have been given this opportunity and they do shine very brightly. Solos are few and far between; it’s all about the dirty, filthy groove. ‘Wolf Cold Pagan’ possesses small interludes of riffing that would class as a solo, but then you don’t really need one.
This is a welcomed release full of nasty, evil and downright filthy tunes. Throw the horns and crack open a beer, this is enjoyable to the max.
