This five piece melodic death metal act from Oulu, Finland have been rocking their local scene since 1999 playing classic covers from the likes of Pantera, White Zombie, Amorphis and Sentenced. After many line-up changes and writing their own music they recorded their first demo in 2003, titled ‘Sypnosis’. Now on their latest EP release ‘Sound of Spite’ the band are hoping after a break from doing gigs to get back out there and show us how the Finnish do it.
The demo’s first track ‘Glance of Fear’ starts off with a heavy riff and the recognisable screamy Finnish vocals we all know and love from their death metal bands. The middle section contains a seriously impressive guitar solo which fits in perfectly. ‘Blood Behind’ begins again with an awesome guitar riff and an impressive drum pattern, followed by the haunting screams of the singer Antti Haapsamo. The middle section contains a ‘Zakk Wylde’ worthy riff with another guitar solo over the top. The track ‘S.C.S.’ impressed me the most with its clear baseline; the vocals are perfect for this genre, the riffs throughout were immense and the track contains the best guitar solo on the EP. You can quite clearly hear the influences from the likes of Amorphis and In Flames throughout.
The fourth track on the EP. ‘Addiction Queen.’ immediately got my head in a small wind-milling frenzy. Definitely the best track on a whole to rock out to with its strong riffs and aggressive vocals. Through the middle of the track it slows down for an even riff and guitar solo that could possibly get the meatiest of metal fans doing their best air guitar impression. The EP ends quite superbly with a slower, mellower track, letting you come down from the four previous faster, more up-tempo tracks on the CD.
With so many talented Melodic Death Metal acts hailing from Finland, it’s no shock to find that I would be impressed with Mors Subita. The whole EP is laid out quite perfectly; track by track in the best order, starting from fast and ending in a slow catchy song. The vocals are screamy and aggressive, the drumming precise, the guitars tight and clear with plenty of stunning solos and riffs. The bass also needs a mention here, as it’s quite clearly heard throughout. The band would definitely benefit from doing a European tour, possibly even try at getting a chance to play some summer festivals. With Finnish Melodic Death Metal becoming more and more popular thanks to the likes of bands such as Children of Bodom and Norther we are definitely going to be hearing more from Mors Subita.
