Scar My Eyes? This Machine? Hmm, I detect a theme developing here. Thing is, when I put this CD in the stereo it doesn’t quite match my initial preconception that these lads are no more than Machine Head clones. Being new to the band, I can hazard a guess that their background lies in the nu-metal field and that their earlier stuff owes perhaps more to Robb Flynn and co. than this E.P. does and now they have developed their own sound and evolved into something more original.
That’s not to say their sound is a million miles away from that of their namesake. You can expect chug by the bucketload and generally some highly competent guitar work. ‘The Game (Think About It)’ really starts to grow on me and after a handful of listens I have the mid paced melody whirling round my head. These guys don’t mince about, that’s for sure and it’s all about the heavy beats, breakdowns and brutality. ‘Disposition’ has a really winding riff that clamours ahead, paving the way up to a groovy section that has rather a Metallica-esque vibe to it.
‘Hope In Silence’ has more melody to it and while the vocals do venture into slightly whiny territory, he manages to put them across well enough to not bother me too much. While to these ears, these five tracks appear rather monotonous, I can’t deny there are some decent song structures here and it’s all executed rather nicely. This is nothing outstanding, but for fans of metalcore you could do worse than this record.
