Artist: War from a Harlot’s Mouth / Burning Skies
Title: self-titled
Type: Split EP
Label: Lifeforce Records

This is interesting. Instead of the usual straight back to back split offering, there are two bands writing for each other and a joint effort. I’ve looked through the publicity and to be honest I can’t get to grips with exactly who wrote what for whom, but there’s mutual collaboration and respect and the bands’ styles are unmistakeable. On the one hand we have the avant-garde death-orientated Hardcore by War from a Harlot’s Mouth from Germany, slowing down occasionally for extra angst.

On the other hand, we have brutal Death/Grindcore from Bristol, courtesy of Burning Skies. The result is an impressive outpouring of anarchic mayhem, starting with three tracks from War from a Harlot’s Mouth. I think I may have detected some melody on Burning Skies’ “Shitformer” but it’s short-lived and their main contribution is technically excellent brutality. Then the whole thing descends into mayhem as War from a Harlot’s Mouth try a bit of grindcore on Burning Skies’ “RKD”, slowing it down in the way that they do before getting back to some serious Hardcore. “Trife Life” is utterly bizarre. I had to laugh. It starts with a sound somewhere between a dripping tap and Rolf Harris, degenerates some more and heads into a “Split EP rap”. The track “Fighting Dwarves with Keytars” brings it to a close with a bit of machine-gun fire brutality from the lads.

This is 16 minutes 40 seconds of complete mayhem, brutality, fun and technical excellence from two accomplished bands. Try it.
