Ingrimm, the medieval/folky metal band from Germany signed to the Black Bards Record Label haven’t been together for that long. but already have 2 albums under their belt plus a recording on a WASP tribute album named ‘The Crimson Covers’. Now with their latest album release ‘Boses Blut’ we will see just how much these funny looking chaps can entertain oneself in a good ole knees up fashion.
Straight away the first track ‘Die Pest’ cracks into a beastly folky riff with some epic heavy drumming, then adding a slice of German growly vocals and a fitting harmonic chorus. A few other tracks that stand out from the rest are, fourth track, ‘Eisenwind’ with its beautiful 50 second guitar and mellow drum intro before blasting into some galloping drum rolls and screamy vocals, and then into a windmill worthy riff. The chorus is quite catchy, if a little cheesy. The middle section almost reminds me of ‘Killswitch Engage’ style vocals, and the drumming does too. ‘Stein auf Stein’ impressed me with the simple but catchy and effective riffs throughout. The drumming pattern is quite simple, but it works! The guitar intro to ‘De Rabe’ seems to me like a bit of a rip off of Velvet Revolvers ‘She Builds Quick Machines’ but apart from that, this track is pretty good. The drumming stands out the most with its fast tempo and just the right amount of sound, giving it a brutal feel. ‘ Wasser Zu Wein’ has a bagpipe intro!!! YES!! And an extremely catchy chorus that made me want to get some quality beer, build a fire and dance and windmill around it! The last track ‘Flammerfest’ has a relaxing acoustic intro but the vocals put me off a bit, seemingly because they sound a little too squeaky. However, the musicians are at their best on this one.
The album on a whole is good; not brilliant, but after one too many pints some of the tracks would certainly get me up for a good jigging along session. The production work is brilliant. Vocals most of the time different and impressive. The drumming techniques are immaculate and guitars superb! There’s no doubt about it that these Germans are talented! I’m not shocked to hear that Ingrimm played Wacken Open Air in Germany last year. I’m guessing they went down a storm!
